Ingredients:
- 2 blocks of extra-firm tofu, pressed and sliced into 1-inch thick steaks
- 1/2 cup barbecue sauce, vegan-friendly
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- Freshly ground black pepper to taste
- Chopped green onions for garnish
Method:
1. Begin by pressing the tofu to remove excess moisture. Wrap the blocks in a clean towel and set a heavy pan on top for about 15-20 minutes.
2. In a bowl, whisk together the barbecue sauce, soy sauce, olive oil, maple syrup, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, and black pepper to create the marinade.
3. Cut the pressed tofu into steak-sized pieces and then press the tofu with a fork or slice diagonal lines with a knife and then marinate in the prepared sauce for at least 30 minutes to one hour to infuse the flavors.
4. Heat a non-stick pan over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the tofu steaks, reserving the marinade for basting.
5. Sear the tofu steaks for about 3-4 minutes on each side until a golden crust forms, basting occasionally with the remaining marinade to build a rich glaze.
6. Once cooked, remove from the heat and let the tofu steaks rest for a couple of minutes.
7. Serve the tofu steaks garnished with chopped green onions alongside your favorite vegan Christmas side dishes.
